Poetry comes with baggage: you have
to get past the notion that all poems have to rhyme, that all poem are about
love (or death), that all poems a driven by clichés that any high school
sophomore can recognize. As a poet, I had to unteach myself all of this. I
had to read hundreds of good poems to wipe away all the bad. This is why I
write poetry: it's a challenge, forcing the mind to turn large ideas into
simple lines.
